Painful Menstrual Cramps and How to Deal With Them

Puberty is the body’s transition from child to adult. During this stage, you will feel all sorts of weird things happening to your body. This is one of the most awkward stages of the body. For boys, the changes are usually getting a deeper voice, growing facial hair and of course, the Adam’s apple.

For the girls, the most significant change is probably the period. It’s when you start to bleed. Getting your first period can be quite a shock. There’s no need to panic though, as it is all perfectly normal. Usually reoccurring once a month, these periods can vary in pain. 

There are times where the pain can be quite tolerable. There are also times wherein it can be extremely painful. There are a lot of factors that may affect the level of pain one feels when having a period.

Menstruation and Dysmenorrhea

A bit of pain, discomfort and muscle cramps are considered normal during menstruation. Feeling excessive pain however, is not. This painful menstruation is called, dysmenorrhea. Menstruation and dysmenorrhea are two different things. Sometimes dysmenorrhea can become so painful that women pass out from it. There are two kinds of dysmenorrhea; the primary and the secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea is when women feel extreme pain before and during their menstrual cycle. Secondary dysmenorrhea usually happens in some women later in life.

The culprits

While there might not be really a way to identify the cause of these painful menstrual periods. There are some women who are more susceptible to it. Some of the reasons are: family history; the women in your family might have a history of having painful periods. Early puberty, specifically before the age of 11. Heavy bleeding during periods, irregular periods and smoking are also some of the reasons.

 Underlying health risks

These painful menstrual periods can also be caused by certain underlying conditions. One of which is the infamous PMS or premenstrual syndrome. This is where you get moody and can change from happy to sad, really quick. These symptoms are caused by hormonal changes in your body and usually happen 1 to 2 weeks prior to menstruation. Don’t worry though since it usually goes away after the bleeding starts.

Fibroids in the uterus is the condition wherein non-cancerous tumors grow inside the uterus and can put pressure on it.

There are a lot of remedies to painful menstrual cramps. Some of which may be done at home. It may come as a surprise to you but massaging your abdomen may work. Warm baths and regular physical exercise can also relieve pain. If in case the dysmenorrhea is too painful to deal with and you can’t even do the simplest of tasks because of it; then in might be time for you to visit a gynaecologist.

Knowing when to do home remedy treatments and when to visit a gynaecologist is important, especially when you notice that the extreme pain isn’t normal.
